Animation: Waved Albatross Migration
Tools: ArcGIS Pro, ESRI StoryMaps, Affinity Photo
Full credit for the map styling to John Nelson at ESRI. I thought his version with Blue Whales was so eye-catching I had to make my own version. I think it's a great practice every once in a while to dedicate most of the effort on a map to just aesthetics. It helps making appealing cartographic choices second-nature so that when I'm making a map where the data and information is telling a really great story it still looks good and draws people in.
I chose data from MOVEBANK.org on the critically endangered Waved Albatross, who nest almost exclusively on the Galapagos Island of Española and travel to the coasts of Ecuador and Peru to feed. This animation displays the movements of tagged individual's movements during a portion of 2008.
